TAMIL FEASTS

Refugee Employee Award

Tamil Feasts is a social enterprise that supports recently settled asylum seekers through the celebration of food and culture. It was started by four brave-heart Tamil Sri Lankan refugees who had been detained in immigration detention for over five years. Nirma, Niroshan, Sri and Nigethan cook up delicious Tamil feasts twice a week. At each meal they share their story describing their situation in detention and the difficulty of living in the community after being detained for such a long time.

Tamil Feasts raises awareness about the difficulties people face seeking asylum in Australia. It conveys the important contribution that people seeking asylum bring to our communities. This unique enterprise simultaneously creates a space in which Australians can show their support for individuals who are experiencing the difficulty of seeking refuge in a foreign land – while partaking in some seriously tasty food!
